Description: Joel Mayes is listed in the Myers journal as a personal friend of W. C. Quantrill. He served as a Major in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was of mixed Cherokee and white ancestry. After the War, he became the Principle Chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1887 and served until his death in 1891. This image is War Date.
