Description: David Allen Mather, AKA "Mysterious Dave" Mather. Date unknown. Mather was an American lawman and gunfighter in the Old West. He was a Lawman in Dodge City, Kansas and Las Vegas, New Mexico. He was the frequent associate of Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson.
He was an outlaw in the early 1870s in Arkansas with Milton Yarberry (seen here in this image) and Dave Rudabaugh. He became later one of the gunslingers gathered by Bat Masterson for the Railroad Wars, 1879-1880. He joined J.J. Webb and Dave Rudabaugh in 1879 in Las Vegas, New Mexico and became a member of the Dodge City Gang there as well as being appointed a U.S. Deputy Marshal for the district by Governor Lew Wallace. In 1883, he became Asst. Marshal in Dodge City, Kansas and the Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Sughrue. He was involved in several Dodge City shooting in the period and may have been killed in Dallas, Texas in 1886. However, his death is mostly unknown and disputed.
