Captain William C. Thurman and J. Christopher Payton

Description: Myers journal noted that this image was taken in August, 1863. L to R: Captain William C. "Wild Bill" Thurman and J. Christopher "Kit" Payton. The Myers journal also states that Thurman was a "Negro hunter". It seems that he is stating that Thurman was a man who chased down run away slaves prior to the war. Thurman was a guerrilla leader in Bates County, Missouri. He was headquartered was an Island in the Marias des Cygnes River. He was protected by the people in the surrounding areas. Kit Payton fought as both a reb and a Union soldier to avoid imprisonment. He was not known to be a guerrilla.
