David Colbert McCanles
Last Random Picture | Next Random Picture
Description: One of two know original images of David McCanles taken in 1860 (Myers journal dated). He was a Rock Creek, Nebraska rancher and former sheriff of Watauga County, North Carolina. He had recently sold his ranch to Russell, Waddell and Majors to be used as a company relay station. Bill Hickok was working for the company there at the time and he and McCanles had had an argument over the affections of a certain Sarah "Kate" Shull. Hickok evidently killed McCanles when McCanles threatned his boss and then shot the two men McCanles came to the station with. Hickok was arrested but acquited when the judge ruled he acted in self defense. The shooting happened on December 16, 1861. Collected by George Myerson Jr.  Ref: Wikipedia Web Site, 2011.
