Six Rock Island Prisoners
Last Random Picture | Next Random Picture
Description: Arguably the rarest image in the Myers collection. It is known that many guerrillas were captured and placed in union prisons. However, an original image of six of them in one of the prisons is essentially unheard of. This is a albumen CDV identified in the Myers journal as "Rock Island Prison". It is undated. Standing L to R: Billy Johnson, Thos. Johnson, and John Eaton. Seated L to R: James Shipley, R.C. Nicholas, and Tom Sidenstryker (Sidenstriker). All of the men were Missouri guerrillas and four of these men died in prison. Billy Johnson died of desease at Rock Island on 12/08/1864.  Thos. Johnson died at Rock Island on 04/21/1865. John Eaton died at Rock Island on 1/22/1865. James Shipley was captured after the battle of Bethlehem, Mo. on November 1-5, 1862. He was known as "the
most notorious scoundrel in Black Fork" by the Yankees. R.C. Nicholas died at Rock Island on 11/28/1864. Tom Sidenstryker served in Robertson's Regiment, as Marmaduke's escort, and fought with Price in Price's last raid. He was released from Rock Island and mustered himself out in 1865.
