Description: One of the unsung characters of the American West, John Joshua Webb was a hunter, teamster, hired gun, lawman, and outlaw. He was an associate of Wyatt Earp, partner of Doc Holliday in a saloon in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and deputy of Bat Masterson. He was a peace officer with the railroad in Dodge City, Kansas in 1878 and became a deputy under Bat Masterson for Ford County, Kansas. In 1880, he became City Marshal of Las Vegas, New Mexico and joined the outlaw band there known as the Dodge City Gang at the same time, using his City Marshal status as a cover. He was convicted of murder in 1880, it was changed to life in prison, and he escaped jail. He died of small pox in 1882 in Arkansas while working as a teamster.
