Description: Dr. John W. Benson was with Quantrill. Before joining Quantrill he was with other Confederate units. He joined the guerrillas in 1862. He was at Lawrence, Kansas in 1863. He was captured and court martialed in September 1863. Shot by firing squad while sitting on his own coffin on October 6, 1863. He had been promised prisoner of war status earlier but the Yankees ignored their promise as they did with many Missouri prisoners. Another Yankee lie.
