Infamous Senator James Lane

Description: Cantey Collection images of General and U.S. Senator James Lane. He led the infamous Jayhawkers of Kansas in some of the most ruthless raids into Missouri from 1858-1865. These raids included burnings of property, wholesale robbery of Missouri citizens personal items, rape, torture,  and murder. Lane home based out of Lawrence, Kansas where he housed the stolen merchandise from Missouri and auctioned what the citizens of Lawrence did not keep for themselves. These raids led to the burning of Lawrence by Quantrill and other Missouri groups. The CDV on the left is rare and has his original signature. The CDV on the right shows him in his Washington Guard clothing. He formed these guards to guard his personal friend and supporter, Abraham Lincoln in Washington D.C. He knew if Robert E. Lee chose to cross over into Washington after the Yankees were defeated at Bull Run, Washington would fall as well as Lincoln's government. Lane went crazy after the Civil War and blew his own brains out like a coward.
