Last Random Picture | Next Random Picture
Description: Myers collection image dated 1859 of Charity McCorkle (Kerr). On her way to Kansas City with her sister-in-law, Nannie McCorkle, she was arrested by Federal troops under General Ewing. She and others were placed in a jail located on Grand in Kansas City and condemned to be banished for aiding the guerrillas. The building was undermined by federal soldiers and she and three other women were killed when the building collapsed on August 14, 1863. Her body was crushed. She and the others became the reason why the guerrillas took up the black flag and showed no further mercy to the Yankee soldiers or their officers.
