Jack Swartz
Last Random Picture | Next Random Picture
Description: Myers collection image of Jack Swartz. This is a very important historical image as it documents that Swartz was a part African American and part white and that he DID EXIST. So far, it is the only image of him. He is listed in the Myers journal as the "flag bearer" at the Lawrence raid. Throughout history, historians have denied that he existed and that there was ever a Quantrill flag as no one had documented the use of one. It has been considered a myth. However, in 1923, an AP article was published in several newspapers that a man by the name of S.H. Sutherland of El Paso, Texas had the flag that he had obtained after Jack Swartz died in New Mexico in 1898. He stated that he was going to donate the flag to the city of Lawrence but evidently that never happened. The flag has since never been found. However, this image and the journal entry "flag bearer" tend to document that a flag actually existed that was flown in Lawrence the morning the guerrillas arrived. Furthermore, the gold jewelry worn by Swartz (who was 16 years old during the Lawrence raid) may well have been acquired in the raid.
