Ulysses S. Grant in civilian dress
Last Random Picture | Next Random Picture
Description: Myers collection original, ambrotype image taken in 1857 of Ulysses S. Grant. The image was found in George Todd's saddle bags after Todd was killed. Todd blamed Grant for ordering the attack on his parents farm in Missouri. He carried this image to identify him if he ever came across him. He never did.

Grant is wearing a civilian overcoat with cloth buttons. At this time, he was a civilian and trying farming in Missouri. The farm eventually failed and he later worked for his father-in-law in his leather shop until the war.

The image is rare, unique, and previously unpublished. It is, for that reason, a very important historical find in the life of the later President of the United States.
